The Jehovah’s Witnesses are an end of days Christian organisation who are known for knocking on doors and rejecting blood transfusions. However, they have also been subject to increasing scrutiny over their handling of child sex abuse cases within their congregations, and their treatment of victims. In this episode of Informer, we speak to a former Jehovah’s Witness elder who was abused as a child but didn’t report what had happened. As an adult, he felt a painful déjà vu when his own daughter told him she had also been abused.

The Church of Scientology is well known for its celebrity following and the intergalactic warrior lord Xenu – who you can only learn about after climbing a paywall of courses worth many thousands of dollars. But who you don’t often hear from are the employees of the Church, who can be forced to work incredibly long hours for a tiny wage.

In this episode of Informer, we speak to a former employee of the Church of Scientology, who was pressured into signing a work contract, had his passport taken off him, and regularly worked 80 hour weeks to earn under £5,000 a year.

“Society at large doesn’t think a huge amount about carers until they need carers.”

Carers are the backbone of the social welfare system, providing mental, physical, and emotional assistance to extremely vulnerable people, such as those with dementia or severe autism. They’re often paid minimum wage to face excrement, physical resistance, and even death on a regular basis, with little emotional support. The war in Afghanistan was sold to the public by the U.S. and its Western allies as a painful but necessary measure to keep the world safe from Islamist terror.

But by the time of the U.S.’s sudden, chaotic withdrawal from the country in August 2021—following a 20-year conflict that cost an estimated 176,000 lives—it was clear that the war had ultimately been a costly exercise in futility. Significantly, that was a conclusion that had been reached much earlier by many of the soldiers who had risked their lives in its name.

For the latest episode of VICE’s Informer series, we spoke to an anonymous former British soldier about his experiences in Afghanistan, which he said left him with long-term psychological impacts and severe disillusionment with his own government.

This summer, a series of TikToks featuring young English influencers removing studded masks went viral. They were announcing the lineup for “The Wave House”, a new kind of TikTok house where the stars would lark around their rented £5m mansion with a limitless budget for extra features, including a water park, a blow-up assault course and Batmobiles.

But during a pandemic in which so many people have lost jobs, some wondered if it was a little insensitive to flex all that money. And it also begged another question: how were they paying for it? We went to meet The Wave House to find out.
